How the Bilingual Project develop confident and articulate Hildans

Before the trip, the students were required to discuss and prepare scripts via Edmodo. This platform allows students from both schools to have a brief introduction of themselves, and to discuss on the project. Each student is encouraged to generate, express, evaluate and share new ideas from different point of views (Self-Directed Learning). Such interaction online enables students to make positive and useful contributions (Collaborative Learning CoL). Hildans would also need to effectively manage time and resources to produce high quality results, while guiding peers.

Through interaction and the teaching of the bilingual scripts, Hildans have shown respect to one another. At the same time, Hildans learnt to communicate effectively with overseas friends. They recognize that they are from a different culture and make the effort to illustrate with examples. While learning more in Chinese, Hildans also learnt to articulate ideas in a clear and concise manner suited for a variety of audiences.

As the themes of the project revolves around scenes that happen in real life, Hildans are exposed to situations that require them to react and respond using English and Chinese. During interaction and practice, Hildans have to think critically whether the scripts prepared are suitable. As Hildans learn continuously, they have shown to become a more articulate and confident person with global outlook and cross cultural awareness.

How the trip benefited the students

The bilingual project which Hildans have embarked on is a good platform for them to be aware of the culture of Taiwan. Hildans showed respect for overseas host during interaction with them and were mindful of their body language and things that they said. They have also improved on their presentation skills as they interact and perform. Hildans presented themselves well as they are proud of being Singaporeans and share with them their knowledge of Singapore。

To add on, SingChia Elementary organized lessons for Hildans to experience firsthand Taiwanese culture, including Calligraphy, Ocarina and the art of tea drinking. Hildans learnt from their buddies from SingChia Elementary as they demonstrate and teach them. Hildans are exposed to these cultures and learnt with interest.

Moreover, Hildans visited museums such as National Palace Museum, where they learnt more about the valuable artefacts of different dynasties, and Shun Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines where they explore the aboriginal culture and practices of the aboriginal tribes at through interactive displays.

To add on to their experiences, Hildans made their own paper as they learnt from Su Ho Memorial Paper Museum. Furthermore, they partake in a DIY session at Kuo Yuan Ye Museum of Cakes & Pastry to experience the making of traditional pineapple pastries. Hildans have also enjoyed making vases or bowls with clay. Their experience in the famous Shilin Night Market has also enriched their learning journey.
